Panorama History
Soproq (Société de gestion collective des droits des producteurs de phonogrammes et de vidéogrammes), now doing business as Panorama, was founded by Adisq. At the time of its creation, Soproq was focused almost exclusively to the management of rights arising from the exploitation of music videos. In 1992, it was mandated by BAnQ to make legal deposit for its members' albums. It continues to do so today, as does the allocation of the prefix that allows members to create their own ISRC codes, the unique identifier for sound recordings or music videos.
The Government of Canada undertakes a major revision of the Copyright Act and establishes a new “equitable remuneration” regime, giving makers the right to receive royalties in return for broadcasting their sound recordings, particularly on radio. The “private copying” regime was also introduced, in response to the exception created in the Act allowing any individual to reproduce sound recordings, works and performances for private use.
It was during this period that Soproq, as it is today, began to organize itself, following changes in the law. The development of a royalty management system, the search for rights holders, the development of the repertoire, in short, a series of actions that enabled Soproq to become the first collective society in North America to distribute royalties under the Equitable Remuneration regime (September 5, 2001).
Soproq continues to evolve, with the team working to expand its repertoire and, above all, to develop processes and procedures that enable increasingly efficient royalty management. In this regard, in 2013, the organization launched a new database system, Octave, allowing it to join the ranks of the most efficient collective management organizations.
Soproq becomes a key player for independent music production in the Canadian neighbouring rights ecosystem. With automated processes and greater expertise, the organization significantly reduces its administration fees, which at the end of this period were between 4% and 7%, depending on the source and origin of royalties.
Soproq experienced remarkable growth during this period. It modernized its technological infrastructure and launched a revised and improved version of the Octave portal, optimizing processes and reducing administrative costs. In fiscal year 2022-2023, royalties reached a record high of more than $17.5 million. With the addition of 838 new members and an alliance with the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA), Soproq is now THE Canadian collective management organization for independent music production.
As part of its alliance with CIMA, Soproq has signed an agreement for the transfer of all independent rights owners from Connect Music Licensing. This strategic agreement aims to provide an integrated solution for music users (background music services and other licensees) by creating a central hub for the clearance of reproduction rights.
