Who needs to obtain a license?
Panorama has a non-exclusive mandate to issue licenses for the reproduction of sound recordings and use of music videos from the repertoire it represents. These licenses avoid the need for users to obtain permission from each rights holder. The licenses cover the general use of the entire repertoire. They do not cover single-use or synchronization rights in film, television, video games or other applications.
The repertoire represented by Panorama includes most of the music made independently in Canada since 1950, as well as many recordings from labels in the United States and Europe.
Reproduction Licenses
The following are the conditions applicable to each type of license:
License for the reproduction of sound recordings on commercial and non-commercial radio, satellite radio, and pay audio services.
License for the reproduction of sound recordings for use as background music in public venues (restaurants, bars, shops, hotels, etc.) and corporate radio, excluding commercial radio.
License for the use of sound recordings and music videos on commercial airplanes and in airport facilities within Canada.
License for the reproduction of sound recordings on web radios and non-interactive or semi-interactive online music services.
License for the use of music videos in television programming, including national, local, and specialized stations, as well as for non-interactive webcasting.
License authorizing the reproduction of sound recordings and/or the use of music videos during one-time events, such as weddings or exhibitions.
License to meet the needs of services that do not fit into any of the established categories.
